Date Palm Plantation - Desert Cash Crop

Currently in India, interest in commercial date farming is picking up. And there are already many dates orchards established in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. In Rajasthan, the largest cultivation area is in Bikaner district followed by Jaisalmer.

It may take 4 to 8 years after planting the palms before they bear fruit but there after the yield is expected to rise in the coming years as trees grow older. Palm trees grown in tropical or warm environments will live between 70 and 100 years. Depending on the species, a mature tree can produce about 75 kgs to 200 kgs of fruit annually.

A True Cash Crop

All parts of the date palm yield products of economic value. Its trunk furnishes timber; the midribs of the leaves supply material for crates and furniture; the leaflets, for basketry; the leaf bases, for fuel; the fruit stalks, for rope and fuel; the fibre, for cordage and packing material; and the seeds are sometimes ground and used as stock feed.

Returns of More than Lifetime

Date palms are highly valued because they provide abundant food in a very harsh place. The trees grow very large; produce fruit for a long time; and can survive long droughts and extremely high temperatures. Unlike other trees, a date palm gives more as it grows older."

Requires Low Maintenance

Dates are actually the biggest oasis and desert cash crop. The trees generally require very little maintenance. For first harvesting, 4 to 5 years are required. In between vegetables like gaur gum, rice, chilly, peas, brinjal etc. can be taken as intercrop.
